Portland State University’s motto, “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” speaks to the value the University places on engagement with its community and region. Two recently released books written by PSU faculty and staff and published by Greenleaf Publishing focus on the importance of teaching and service in the work of the 21st-century university.
The first volume in the Sustainable Solutions series, Let Knowledge Serve the City, shares the University’s collective successes and challenges in engaging with community partners on sustainability initiatives; the second volume, University–Community Partnerships, looks at 13 case studies and offers pragmatic advice on working with community organizations.
Edited by PSU’s B.D. Wortham-Galvin, Jennifer Allen, and Jacob Sherman, these two timely books provide practical examples of how colleges and universities can develop programs that connect students and faculty with the needs of local communities to advance efforts around social justice, climate change, sustainable economic development, and more.
